North Carolina Family & Divorce Law

Family and divorce law in North Carolina is a complicated process. Don't be afraid to ask me questions so that you know what to expect. Here are some of the more commonly asked questions I receive.

Q: How long will my case take?
Your case can be handled expeditiously if you and your spouse can communicate and come to an agreement on the issues. If not then I will explore your options with you. If the disputed issues are fairly limited, both parties are willing to voluntarily exchange information pertinent to the issues, and both sides agree, you can go to mediation with a paid mediator. Sometimes, litigation is necessary. How long litigation takes depends on a number of factors, including but not limited to, the judge assigned to your case and the willingness of all involved to move the case forward.

Q: How much will my case cost?
My charges are based on the amount of time spent on your case. Most lawyers will say that they charge a "reasonable fee." Unfortunately, this is often just not the case. Fees for the representation of individuals in domestic cases can get out of hand. I will charge you a reasonable hourly rate for what I do. I will not double bill you or do work that is not necessary to properly prepare your case. Hire me and you can count on working with someone you trust to keep you informed, charge a reasonable fee, and earn that fee.

Q: Are there other costs besides fees?
Yes. If a case is filed, you will have to pay the filing fee charged by the court and service charges. If after consultation with you it is decided to take depostions, or the other side takes them, there will be court reporter fees. I do not, as many firms do, charge for copies unless such a large volume is involved it has to be outsourced. I do not charge separately for long distance phone call costs. I do not charge courier fees or separately for paralegal time.

Q: What happens when a case is filed?
I will explain the court process to you up front and keep you informed as your case progresses. I will return your phone calls. You will be billed for my time expended with you on the phone. I will copy you with relevant correspondence. I will answer your questions. I will tell you how to best prepare your case for hearings and trial. My staff and I will be with you every step of the way.
